NIHR Participates in a Forum on Universal Periodic Review Mechanism

27 Nov 2021

The National institution for Human Rights (NIHR) participated in a forum on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism via Zoom video conference program, which was organized by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in England in cooperation with UPR Info and the British Institute for Human Rights, with the participation of a number of national human rights institutions, civil society institutions and non-government organizations.  The forum aimed to introduce the role of national human rights institutions in following up on the reports submitted by the States to the UPR mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council.

During the forum, a worksheet was presented on the role of national institutions and their broad mandate in the area of protection and promotion of human rights through active participation in submitting the parallel report to the UPR mechanism, as well as the most essential challenges faced by it being a stakeholder in submitting such parallel reports to the UN Human Rights Council bodies.

The UPR, which was established upon a UN Human Rights Council Resolution No. 60/251 of 2006, is a procedures that involves the improvement of human rights conditions in the State Members to the UN, as each State is reviewed once per four and a half years, where the review is based on reliable objective information to show the extent to which each State fulfills its human rights obligations in a manner that ensures universality of application and equal treatment of all States.
